Federer is now two Grand Slam titles behind Pete Sampras's record of 14

Roger Federer admitted he was starting to think about the all-time record for Grand Slam victories after claiming his 12th at the US Open on Sunday.

Federer, 26, beat Novak Djokovic 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in the final and is now two Grand Slam victories from equalling Pete Sampras on 14.

It will be interesting to watch his progress next year..Once he did it was a fairly comfortable win for the world number 1 and three-time defending champion..

Sharapova did herself no favours in the match by hitting 12 double faults. She was also on the wrong side of the winners to errors count. Sharapova hit 36 winners and hit 49 unforced errors. Several of the Sharapova double faults came at the worst of times giving up a game with a double fault.
